What Pisses Me Off about Digg

This is sour grapes, but what pisses me off about digg, delicious, stumbleupon and other social bookmarking sites is that I thought of it in 2000. I even had a domain name all picked out (which I let expire, it's probably hosted by a domain squatter now). I even had my brother draw a logo for it. The logo was a thumb with a smiley face. If I find it I'll post it but it's probably lost to the ages.

It was supposed to work with 2 bookmarklettes, one for thumbs up, one for thumbs down. Basically a site would get voted up or down (dugg or burried in today's terms by users. I never got around to implementing anything but a crappy demo in ColdFusion (my language of choice at the time).

Sure Phil, you thought of youtube and myspace too!

It's funny, you know... I have a friend who said he invented youtube like 10 years ago (Hi Corky!) and they had it up and running, but the bandwidth just wasn't there for the average user... I believe him and all (he's my friend right?) but when he tells this story I think, "Uh huh, sure you did... So tell me again why you work where I do and don't have 1.6 billion dollars?" Boo hoo to him.

Well, in my case, the advent of browser extensions wasn't possible in XUL/crome stuff, and I still don't know how to make an activeX control. Also, I just didn't think people would actually use it. Talk about defeatist! Boo hoo to me, too.

Anyway, the whole thing just makes me more inspired to actually try and do something with my next big idea.

Also I have another 7 year old idea that no one has done anything with enough to make it to my radar. Maybe they have and I just don't know it. I should implement that one too and see what happens.
