The soft woosh of the air conditioning and the ceiling fan, and that sound the neighbors make between 2 and 3 am that sounds like they're trying to corral ponies in their bedroom. It's what woke me up earlier.

The name on my birth certificate is Nicole Geniene Hankemeier. Nicole means victorious army and is the French form of the name Nikki (the nickname my father calls me by) that was derived from Nike, the winged “goddess” of Samothrace also known as Victory, but the statue is missing its head! It is the name my then Navy sailor father gave me, but I often wonder if God is trying to give me a new name.
For the past decade many people who I hardly know or have no connection that I am aware of to my past, have often tried to call me Michelle. In the past few days two people who do not know each other have called me Michelle. One of those people was a lady I’ve seen at church lots of times but she knew my original name. When I transferred to the Bible Study Fellowship class in Burlingame a few weeks ago, my new leader also called me Michelle without intending to call me by a name I was not. I cannot think of any movie stars or celebrities by that name that I look like, nor can the people who have called me by that name. This has happened so much that I’ve started to question people as to what made them use that name. The first person I remember using it was a clarinetist in Aptos that I played duets with over ten years ago. He had just converted to Catholicism. Considering how many biblical characters have had name changes it would not seem unlike G_D to do such a thing. The repetition of hearing people call me Michelle has been so bizarre that I looked the name up in several name books to learn more about it. It is actually Hebrew and means “Who is like God?” It is the feminine form of Michael, as in the archangel, which to me seems a lot more victorious than headless Nike. Nike may have great posture but she can no longer sing or demonstrate great diction since she has lost her head. I may be made in the image of G_D but I am NOT a goddess.

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
My mother couldn't decide on a name at first so for a few weeks, I didn't have one. My original birth certificate is blank. However, when she did decide she came up with Michelle. She liked the name and she had known a girl who was in a railroad accident and had both legs amputated but was really cheerful and upbeat all the time.
