New Year's Resolutions and a Cute Sentence

12 Comments | Latest by: Phil | Add Your Comment! »»

To the people who say, "I don't make New Year's Resolutions because I don't think you should make a change in your life on an arbitrary schedule..." (I'm looking at YOU, Jon) I say: "Pish Posh!" and "Get on the bandwagon!".

Making a resolution does not prevent one from making a change at other times of the year. As such, this list may seem like small items, but they're just the latest in my "test and tweak" approach:

  • Stop buying the 2 things I spend the most money on: Books and Music. I have vowed Michelle that I will literally stop buying books, and that I will at least limit my music purchases dramatically.
  • One exception, which is a motivator. I give myself full license to spend any and all profits from my own outside work - not counting my regular salary at My Job - on books that I want. It's a little carrot. These would include things like AdSense on my sites and people paying for web services I'm creating.
  • Finish all the books I have not finished, or started. Another reason not to buy new books, I have books I haven't even read yet.
  • Get better at Spanish.
  • Refocus my exercise efforts, but not try to kill myself like I was last year, due to a recent visit with my doc and some concern over my EKG.
  • 10 Minute Shits:  self explanatory.

What are your resolutions? You could comment below!

I read this from the Humanized Weblog and had to smile:

The thing about an identity is that it’s supposed to be unique, so allowing one identity to repesent [sic] multiple identities is as baffling as this sentence.

It's the "breaking the 4th wall of writing". Cute.

Well, I didn't remember you telling me about your "carrot" method to purchasing books, although I do advise that maybe you keep your wishlist on your website handy and full of nuggets of delicious books that you are drooling for. At least that way when different occasions arise, maybe friends and family know what to get you. Of course, you could always just use the FREE library for books that you think you're only going to read once (or never finish reading).

So far as my own resolutions, I'm not entirely sure. As most people I know, I want to be healthier and I have been doing okay so far the last few months, especially after joining the gym again.

So my resolutions:

Maintain, if not lose, weight and be healthier overall (i.e. leaner, eat better, sleep better, etc)

Procrastinate less!!!!

Practice my new awesome clarinet that my super amazing boyfriend bought me

Organize my finances, especially with the dreadful realization of paying student loans soon

Finish my dissertation (or as much of it as possible if there are complications)

That's enough for now. Don't want to overdo it. I'm making myself ill (hurl)

Howdy Phil,

Thanks for visiting my blog. Good luck with the non book buying. I'm lucky; there is a basket of free books at the office of where I live now. Free books!

Try the library. ;)

I don't get it. Your goal is to take 10 minute shits? Does that mean you want to take longer ones than you've currently been taking or are you wanting to speed things up and your goal is to shorten them to 10 minutes?

A 10 minute shit? Dude, you're gonna get varicose veins!!

Honestly, Erica, why he decided to share this with the world is still beyond me. And it's shorter by the way. He usually just multitasks in the bathroom...e-mail, reading, talking on the phone, etc. Yeah, try putting up with it when you have to use the bathroom. Hence, why we have two in our apartment.

Yes, I have had the unfortunate experience of being on the phone with Phil while he relieved himself! =P I just hope he's not eating in there too. If you see the microwave, toaster and coffee pot in the bathroom, Michelle, you might need to do an intervention. ;)
