Beryl and Beth Walking for Lupus

Update: Beryl and Beth raised over $1500! I know for a fact several of their donors came straight from my email and this blog post! Thanks for helping everyone! You Rock!
My awesome friend Beryl and her friend Beth are walking for Lupus this weekend.
I'm asking you to help them, but before I go into detail, I have a question for you:
Have you ever tried to raise money for charity? Those of you who have know it's a lot of time and effort.
What if after all that hard work none - not one! - of your friends helped you out?
Let that thought sink in for just a moment.
Feels crummy doesn't it?
Now I'd like to tell you about TWO ways I'm helping out Beryl and Beth!
The best part is these 2 ways of helping are EASY and QUICK for you to emulate!
The first way I'm helping is posting this here on my blog and asking YOU to help. In a quick and easy step, I'm extending their reach to include you - my close personal friends and visitors to my web site.
This website is read All over the world! Just imagine how far this post will go!
You can emulate this step easily by either quickly rewording this entry and posting it to your blog, or simply linking here.
The 2nd way that you can easily help is by making a donation. I made a donation this morning in LESS THAN 3 MINUTES!
I don't share this with you to brag, but to encourage and motivate you. If I can spare just a few bucks - and believe me it was only a few - so can you!
Beryl and Beth are just $35 dollars away from their goal of $500. If all the people who read this give just $5, they'll be way over!
If all of you send this email to just 5 people, we can help them DOUBLE, maybe even TRIPLE their goal!
Start your weekend off right!
Introducing: StreamStory.com
You may remember when I introduced Streams back in May. What was once Streams is now the new StreamStory!
How it Works
You are shown a random word. You type what that word makes you think of, then the next thing you think of, and you keep going. It's like free word association, stream of consciousness, free thinking, etc.
You can link to your streams and save them by becoming a member.
What is Streams For?
Possible uses are: jump-starting creativity, getting feelings out, getting into memories that are old, letting it all out, emotional dumping, healing... Journaling.
Try out StreamStory today, sign up if you're excited about it, and definitely let me know what you think. Also, while you're there, remember to Suggest a new Starter.

Recent Obsession: Rubik's Cube

I'm a throwback, for sure, but I decided a couple of weeks ago that no self-respecting nerd should remain clueless about how to solve the Rubik's Cube. This comes only about 3 short years after I decided no self-respecting nerd should not own a Rubik's cube. I bought one at a local drugstore when I lived in Phoenix. After mixing it up it had remained unsolved ever since.
After watching Dan Brown's tutorial on YouTube several times, and memorizing the algorithms, I have learned (but not mastered) the layer by layer method. I'm now attempting to learn the Fridrich f2l (first two layers) method. This is the preferred method used by so-called "Speedcubers".
Fridrich's page of algorithms is a little confusing for me. I've found a bunch of crappy videos on YouTube explaining f2l, and one decent one. It's nice because he doesn't go blindingly fast while reinforcing all stereotypes about nerds being socially awkward. He goes slow.
For quick reference, here's a list of steps and algorithms I've learned. I'm typing this from memory, and I'm a n00b, so comments and corrections are welcome.
Confirm Your Doctor's "In-Network" Status

Today's Advice:
Always confirm your doctor's "In-Network" status. Don't assume like I did. I thought my cardiologist was in network because I was being referred by another in network doctor. I found out today my cardiologist is not "In Network". Unfortunately I found out too late.
The result of my follies? I may be stuck with a bill for over $5,400. Wow. I'm going to appeal to my insurance company to see if they will cover more. I'm not sure why they're not covering more, I have to investigate. I'm also going to see if there's any legal action or mitigation I can take. I don't think there is... Advice?
In the mean-time, learn from my foolishness. I feel like a fucking tool, because frankly, I could have asked or did research online before going to this son-of-a-bitch.
I'll Live, Fortunately?
Incidentally, my heart is OK for now. I'm just on the good side of borderline. Or it's a variance and I'm a "big guy with a big heart." I kind of like the sound of that, although today I feel somewhat rueful about it. The bill today gave me massive panic attacks, and I practically did have a heart attack. That doctor better hope he's right and I don't keel over... or he'll never collect. Jerk-ass!
Predictably, Depression Sets In
For now, I'm massively depressed. I feel like a pawn, a dupe, always the victim, like I'll never get ahead financially, that my efforts to advance myself will continually be thwarted by the Universe or my own stupidity, that my only value on Earth is to work and work and give my money all away every month, that I'm pretty much too dumb to live. Before you interrupt my pity-party, I gotta tell ya, that's kinda the way it's been going lately...
The "The Secret" and LoA people would tell me that the above statement is a creative force and I'm bringing my misery on myself. In a way I hope that they're right, and I create my own reality because: please, come say that to me in person so I can kick you in the throat.
How's your day been?
Valentine's Day Trip

I'm flying to Virginia to visit Michelle for Valentine's Day. It's our second Valentine's Day together, and I wouldn't miss it. Hopefully the weather is conducive to flying.
While I'm up there, we're going to stay at her place for a couple of nights, but also spend a couple of nights at a place up in Historic Williamsburg. It's a condo type arrangement with a tiny kitchenette. It looks like it will be really nice.
I miss Michelle a ton. We talk most every day. Sometimes we just say hello, miss you, and briefly catch up on each other's day. Other times we have long conversations. We almost always banter, of course. Long distance relationships are not easy, but Michelle and I are doing well, I think, considering...
Hope you have a great Valentine's Day with someone you love. What are your plans? Flowers? Chocolates? A romantic rendezvous? Affair?!

I've Got The (Humor) Power!

Cue the CC Music Factory, because I've got the power, the Humor Power that is. I sent in a few captions to the Humor Power December Cartoon Caption Writing Contest and I won 2nd Place. Hooray for me! All the entries were funny and I had a good laugh over them.
I encourage you to check out John Kinde's blog and web site, Humor Power. John does different contests every month including caption writing, and other joke writing contests. His observations, critique, and lessons on humor make being funny accessible to everyone. Good stuff!
(The recent addition of the photo of me in the header wearing noses-glasses is coincidence.)
