Let's All Go to The Lobby

2 Comments | Latest by: Phil | Add A Comment! »»

Joe and Bob are lifelong friends. They're both in the mood to see a movie. Joe wants to see a comedy; He always wants to see a comedy, because he is opposed to seeing dramas. Bob would like to see a drama, or a documentary even.

Joe and Bob meet up at the theatre. Joe says, "Let's see Scary Movie 27!"

Bob says, "Joe, I really don't want to see that. I really want to see An Incontinent Myth."

What should happen now?

  1. Joe should compromise and finally see a documentary, since they're friends.
  2. Bob should compromise again and see a comedy, since they're friends.
  3. They should each see their own movie, but agree to meet up afterward, since they're friends.
  4. Joe should tell Bob that he's opposed to documentaries, that Bob is bad for wanting to see them, and never speak to him again.

Life on Rails

In a recent interview on Nightline, Rick Warren said the following. These thoughts are very timely for me:

... God is more interested in your character than your comfort.

God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy.

Good reminders for me right now when I have gone through varying levels of comfort the past few months.

I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don't believe that anymore.

Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it's kind of like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life.

Life on Rails? Now we're Getting Real! :-) (Sorry everyone, this is RoR nerd humor.)

Remembering God's Heart

Add A Comment! »»

I watched a sermon titled "Remembering God's Heart" on The Coastlands web site. It has some great words from Daniel relating in a roundabout way to depression.
"God doesn't withhold curative treatment from you because maybe this particular thing is your fault."
And check out Daniel in his Mr. Rogers sweater: Remembering God's Heart (via Mom).

Go Through the Valley

Great thoughts from Mom on Spiritual Journey:

The Bible says, he is close to the broken-hearted. Why would he say that unless he expected us to be broken hearted at times? The Bible says he comforts us in all our afflictions. Why would he say that unless he expected us to be afflicted?

Tony Morgan

Another great blog I like is Tony Morgan, one of the simply strategic guys (whatever that means). Lately he had two great posts, Red Letter Words and a follow up on agreement. I think Satan laughs when Christians bicker over stuff that has nothing to do with one's response to Christ's offer of Salvation. Check him out!

Heathens Make the Best Christian Films?

Add A Comment! »»

I pretty much want to blog every thing I read on Think Christian, but rather than do that, I choose to just link there occasionally so people can learn about it and proceed to get good blogging straight from the source without my inane commentary (like this paragraph).

I just had to link to Why do Heathens Make the Best Christian Movies? (found on Think Christian here) though, because it not only asks a great question, but answers the question so nicely and with such detail, when I read it, I had a big "Thank You" moment.

As in: Chris (to Brian, the dog): Well we have to look at your anus all the time! Stewie: Thank you!

Church Publishes Calendar with Nudes

Add A Comment! »»

Jeff links to a story on Yahoo about a Christian church in Germany that has published a calendar depicting scenes from the Bible.

"We wanted to represent the Bible in a different way and to interest young people. Anyway, it doesn't say anywhere in the Bible that you are forbidden to show yourself nude."

Me thinks by young people they mean teens bursting with hormones. Is there full frontal male nudity in there for the young ladies? My suspicion is that most of their first batch of 2000 calendars were sold to men in their 40's.

Should Church Close on Christmas

There's an interesting post and even more interesting conversation going on at Think Christian about church being closed on Christmas. I posted a comment over there.

What do you think? Should a church close on Christmas?

Book of the Day

The book of the day is... The Bible! I bought a new copy of The Bible today. It's significant for a couple of reasons. First, it's the first (well, second really) Bible that I've bought for myself with my own money. Second it comes at a significant time for me in my spiritual journey.

I got The Message translation because I don't want to study so much as read. I enjoy the conversational style of The Message and feel like it's different enough from what I'm familiar with to help me immerse myself in the text and experience God in a fresh, new way.

Also I had a very Arthur Dent moment when I picked up this copy at the book store. It is leather bound with an owl etched on the front. Below him is the word, "THINK."

"I like the cover... It's the most useful or intelligible thing anyone has said to me all day".

Who's Judgement Matters?

3 Comments | Latest by: Auntie Em | Add A Comment! »»

My friend T said an amazing thing tonight: "Why are we always seeking approval from people like ourselves; other sinners; people who's judgment doesn't matter?" He then went on to tell some cool stories of things he had done on the basis of this idea; to rock the boat or stick up for the little guy. Thanks for the inspiration, man. I'm going to be meditating on this one for at least a year.

I Must Read Seth's Book

I've been meaning to pick-up Seth Godin's book, All Marketers Are Liars, for professional interest. After reading this terrific review, All Preachers Are Storytellers by Dash, I'm even more inspired to read it.
