Ghostly Swim Album
Record label Ghostly International and modern cult classic programmers Adult Swim have paired up for a compilation of new music and art.
The entire album can be downloaded for free here. The compilation includes a live version of a track from Tycho's upcoming release. I really enjoy his music and art. Check it out!

Sara Bareilles is that groovy artist you've been hearing in TV commercials and in the grocery store.

Cutest lyric I've heard in a long time...
We'll do what Mary and Joseph did...
Without the kid
Updated Title: Was Marry Me. But I'm giving my girlfriend a heart attack.
What Are Your Impulse Puchases?
When you're at the store or online, what do you spend money on impulsively?
For me, it's books and CD's. And E-books and mp3 downloads.
One Man Bands
I enjoy several one man bands. Not solo artists, but multi-instrumentalists who's albums sound like they're being performed by several musicians. By contrast, I love David Wilcox, but his music can be performed by him and a guitar (which is a testament to the music and performer).
Sometimes these artists even have "band" sounding names. Then, when you check the liner notes for the band members, there's only one dude. Yes, most of them use guest musicians, but the core musical/creative vision is theirs alone.
OK, I'll be honest, I'm fuzzy on what the distinction between "solo artist" and "one man band" is in my mind, but I definitely categorize them differently.
Some of my favorite examples of this "one man band" concept follow. What are yours? All my examples are men. Any women doing this?
- The Incredible Moses Leroy (Ron Fountenberry)
- Russian Futurists (Matthew Adam Hart)
- Sufjan Stevens
- Caleb
Saddest Songs

Spinner has released a list of The 25 Most Exquisitely Sad Songs in the Whole World, and, while I'm thrilled that one of my favorite bands of all time, The Pernice Brothers tops the list, I'm surprised that they chose that particular Pernice Bros. song. I think they have sadder songs, personally. There are a lot of pretty-glaring omissions, in my opinion. And, (of course I would say this) No David Wilcox on the list?!
Also, the list is really "recent song" heavy. Lots of new releases and indie artists. Maybe if they had called it "The 25 Most Exquisitely Sad Indie Songs From the Last 10 years", they would have something. Yes, there are older songs on there, granted.
I read the comments and pretty much everyone has a comment to the effect of, "OMG How could they forget {blank}!?!?" where the blank is filled in by 1 cut from the 10 albums that person has heard. There are a few repeats in the comments, which, if you got enough of those, you could probably come up with a list that was more accurate - or at least, agreed upon. For the most part, though, the comments list another 50 different songs which people found sad.
I think a sad song list is deeply personal and based on experience. Hell! Freakin' Walkin' on Sunshine could probably be heart-wrenching for someone. Here's my partial list (what I can think of off the top of my head, in no particular order). What's yours?
- For Real (David Wilcox covering Bob Franke)
- Let Them In, Peter (Wilcox covering John Gorka [putting to music a poem by Edwin Mccain])
- Chet Baker's Unsung Swan Song (Wilcox)
- Jamie's Secret, Language of the Heart, How Did You Find Me Here (again, Wilcox - I'm a fan, OK?)
- Telegram from the Future. Stop. (Russian Futurists)
- Our Time Has Passed (Pernice Bros.)
- Um, a bunch of stuff.
I'll post an update later after going through my iTunes collection.
The Police!

My first long-term really favorite band was The Police. In honor of them, my fondness for them, and their reunion... And because I've never embedded a video in my blog before... It seems fitting to share this now, and that they should be the first:
Menos Por Favor

Mas by Kinky *was* cool, about two years ago, like when it was in the end credits of Man on Fire; back before it accompanied the credits or commercial for every movie or TV show with an even slightly latin flavor. Now it's everywhere. Hey, Hollywood, buy a new record!
Strumming In Church
Today in worship service we played a "special" in honor of our friend J who is leaving. He's leaving with his family in a couple of weeks, but D, or director will be out of town the next two weeks, so we did the special today. (A special is a song done during the offering, or communion, or just on it's own, but not part of the "regular" worship set). The song we did is "Who You Are" which is delightfully simple but greatly spiritual; a terrific tune to sing. We might bring it into the regular worship rotation, since it would be easy to teach.
Shine Your light into the dark Speak Your truth into my heart I wanna know who You are
That's the verse...
Out Beyond Ideas

David Wilcox has a new album out called Out Beyond Ideas. Matt blogged about it here. I just got it as a birthday present last month. It's a terrific album. David's music is so soulful and powerful. It brings up so many emotions in me. Good singable truth put to rhythm; definitely one for the sage.
